Lot No. 898. A FINE QUALITY 12 bore Pinfire Double Barrelled Sporting Gun by James Purdey. Serial No.5964. Twist barrels with concave top rib engraved -J.Purdey 314 1/2 Oxford Street London-. The pin holes with "Flash" engraving. The action body, signed back action locks, tang and underlever engraved with best quality scrolls. The standing breeches with pin hole locating lugs. Engraved trigger guard retaining 60% original charcoal blue to the bow. Figured walnut straight hand stock chequered at the wrist and cross bolted forend. Some storage marks to stock, some surface rust spots. A genuine sleeper with overall dirt yet traces of colour case hardening to unexposed parts. Found under a pile of rubbish in a garage. Serial number 5964 suggests this gun was manufactured in 1861, therefore making it a very early pin fire system when other makers were still relying on the percussion ignition Brls. 30".

Colour case hardened octagonal turn-off barrels with "Flash" engraving at the muzzle and mouth. Each top flat ensuing foliage out of a jardiniere. The rounded locks signed -Jno. Manton & Son Dover St. London- within ribbands and together with the breeches, underside and colour case hardened dolphin hammers engraved with acanthus foliage. Each barrel marked 1 and 2 respectively with the breeches and with London proofs. Fire blued concealed triggers and engraved safety bolts. Finely chequered walnut bag shaped grips each with engraved silver butt caps and vacant silver escutcheons. Very Crisp. Near Grade 1 with original colour case hardening. Brls.2.5 ins.

Lot No. 929. A VERY RARE English fullstocked flintlock blunderbuss pistol, Circa 1770. The massive brass barrel signed -I.N.o GOPSILL- with gently flared muzzle. The breech part with acanthus foliage engraving. The left side struck with Crowned V and GP marks of the London Proof House, and maker's mark "M.M.". The rounded lock signed - MEMORY -. Swan necked cock and pan with frizzen bridle. The substantial stock of dark walnut carved with a shell motif behind the breech tang. The high quality furniture comprises of a gadrooned tailpipe, a superb open-work sideplate incorporating a rococo cartouche, two flags and cannon, the guard with bell form finial, escutcheon with grotesque mask and heavy skullcrusher buttcap with long tangs, scroll engraved sides and grotesque mask to base; for a pistol of similar form see "Antique Guns & Pistols" by Hawkins Page 91. Light overall pitting to lock, some minor stock bruising, small crack to forend. Grade 2. An impressive piece and a good specimen of these large, distinctive pistols that are much sought after.
