Lot No. 602 A VERY RARE .577 Cal Experimental breech loading Enfield Pattern 1856 rifle based on the hinged breech system of Capt.Terssen. Charcoal blued barrel with side bayonet lug and secured by two blued bands. The blued ramp and ladder rearsight graduated only on the right side - 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 -. The chamber marked - G.L. & CIE -. The colour case hardened breech also marked - G.L. & CIE - and numbered 42 (matching the sight). The breech lever acting on a fulcrum which strikes the firing pin, and automatically locks upon closing. The colour case hardened lock marked - 1897 TOWER - and with crowned - V.*R.- cypher. Charcoal blued hammer and furniture. Varnished walnut fullstock and steel clearing rod. Grade One Plus. Brl.30". Capt. Terssen, being Commandant of Manufacture d'Armes de L'Etat in Liege, worked on various breech loading methods until the problems with the Albini Braedlin and Comblain rifles were overcome. This conversion being similar and was a contender for the British Trials up against the Snider.
