The top flat engraved -Sharps Rifle Manufg. Co. Hartford. Conn-. The breech -Calibre 50-. Correct back sight marked -R.S.Lawrence Patented Feb 15th. 1869-. The action marked -C.Sharps Pat. Sept. 12th 1848-. The tang with correct micro adjustable peepsight. Triggerguard lever and adjustable double set triggers. Walnut butt stock and forend. Crisp. Grade 3 plus with nice brown patina. Lot No. 602 A VERY RARE .577 Cal Experimental breech loading Enfield Pattern 1856 rifle based on the hinged breech system of Capt.Terssen. Charcoal blued barrel with side bayonet lug and secured by two blued bands. The blued ramp and ladder rearsight graduated only on the right side - 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 -. The chamber marked - G.L. & CIE -. The colour case hardened breech also marked - G.L. & CIE - and numbered 42 (matching the sight). The breech lever acting on a fulcrum which strikes the firing pin, and automatically locks upon closing. The colour case hardened lock marked - 1897 TOWER - and with crowned - V.*R.- cypher. Charcoal blued hammer and furniture. Varnished walnut fullstock and steel clearing rod. Grade One Plus. Brl.30". Capt. Terssen, being Commandant of Manufacture d'Armes de L'Etat in Liege, worked on various breech loading methods until the problems with the Albini Braedlin and Comblain rifles were overcome. This conversion being similar and was a contender for the British Trials up against the Snider.

Fire blued hook safety and 'S' shaped arbour pin latch and -W.TRANTER'S PATENT- oval stamp. Charcoal blued five shot cylinder with matching number surrounded with engraved foliage. Burnished side rammer also with oval stamp. Charcoal blued trigger guard and butt cap, chequered walnut grip. In it's original case lined in blue baize. Accessories include - correct 120 bore brass double cavity bullet mould with Tranter's stamp and blued sprue cutter, ebony handled turnscrew and nipple key, rosewood clearing rod and bag shaped powder flask. The two stage barrels with slightly swamped muzzles and chiselled centre and girdles. Each breech having two gold poincons of Pedro Esteva of Barcelona and inlaid with silver crosses. Each tang with chiselled foliage. Signed rounded locks, swan necked cocks and broad frizzens. Walnut fullstocks having carved aprons and teardrops. The gilt brass furniture with rococo side plates, thumb piece escutcheons and long "ear" butt caps having grotesque masks. The trigger guards with acanthus finials.
