Lot No. 584 AN EXTREMELY RARE AND HISTORICALLY IMPORTANT .303 Cal. Godsal Patent Bolt Action Rifle. Serial No.30 (Matching). Blue round tapered barrel with raised foresight and two raised rearsight blocks. Conical breech. Travelling block (or bolt) is in three parts, removal is achieved by depressing the catch at the rear of the butt, walnut halfstock of bull-pup design. Some staining and minor stock bruising. Otherwise Grade 2. Brl.25 ins.

NB: During the 1880s The British War Office was looking for an alternative to the Martini-Henry. The Godsal being one submitted for trials. Major P.T.Godsal designed and drew up plans for his bolt action rifle. His first Prototype was manufactured by a skilled mechanic. The later ones made by Webley & Scott. It took some 20 years to establish a secure bolt system but by this time the Lee Metford was in use therefore the Godsal type was never accepted. FAA Category:S1

Engraved colour case hardened back action lock and hammer. Walnut halfstock with chequered wrist and double cross bolted forend. Brass furniture and original rosewood ramrod having brass capped worm and top. A sleeper, Grade 1. Retaining all original finish. Brl 44".
